Getting Ahead of Flu Season: Prevention Tips for Your Family

As temperatures drop across central and eastern Ohio, flu season ramps up, typically peaking sometime between December and February. Getting a flu shot in October or November gives your immune system time to build protection before that peak arrives.

Simple habits that reduce spread

Beyond the vaccine, a few basic habits go a long way: washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when sick, and keeping high-touch surfaces clean during the school and work week. None of this is new advice, but it remains effective, and reinforcing it with kids at home tends to matter most.

Who should get a flu shot?

The flu vaccine is recommended for nearly everyone six months and older, with particular importance for young children, older adults, pregnant women, and anyone with a chronic health condition such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease. If you discussed immunizations during National Immunization Awareness Month back in August, this is the next step in that same conversation.

Where to get vaccinated

Southeast Healthcare’s Primary Care Services team offers flu shots as part of routine visits, and our in-house pharmacy, Apothecare, can often provide vaccines quickly without a separate appointment. This makes it easier for busy families to check off flu shots for everyone at once.
