Back to School Physicals: What Parents Need to Know

With classes starting back up across central Ohio, now is the time to schedule a back-to-school physical if your child has not had one recently. Many schools and sports programs require an up-to-date physical form before the first day, and getting it done early means one less thing to worry about during a busy transition.

Why back-to-school physicals matter

A physical exam is about more than checking a box for a school form. It gives a provider the chance to track your child’s growth, review their vaccination record, screen for vision or hearing concerns, and talk through any questions you have about nutrition, sleep, or behavior. Catching a small issue now, before the school year is in full swing, is almost always easier than addressing it later.

For kids playing sports this fall, a sports physical also checks that their heart, lungs, and joints can handle the demands of practice and competition. Coaches and athletic directors usually have a deadline, so it helps to book the appointment as soon as possible.

What to bring to the appointment

  • Your child’s immunization records, if you have them on hand
  • Any school or sports physical forms that need a provider signature
  • A list of current medications or supplements
  • Notes on any symptoms or concerns you want to discuss
