Artist Statement

I am an artist who fights depression using a brush.

I’ve always suffered from depression and found many ways to hide it from the world. After the birth of our third child, I spiraled into a dark place. I was unable to leave the house. We had three young children and I knew these should be the best years of our lives.

My husband was very upfront and explained to me that I needed help. Looking back now I know our marriage and family would have been destroyed without his honesty and encouragement. It wasn’t easy, but after years of therapy and medicine I found balance.

It has been 25 years since and now I’m experiencing a new difficult. I lost my father and brother to cancer. My father-in-law and mother-in-law passed away. Our children began exhibiting symptoms of depression. Now add the pandemic and top it off with my husband being diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. I understand these life events are no different from what others are facing. With my history I knew I needed to find balance because I was falling back into my old ways. I became uninterested in things that I used to enjoy and wanted to hide and never leave the house again.

One morning I pulled myself out of bed, entered the studio, and began painting with abandon. I mixed colors I rarely used and applied them to large blank canvases. I used not only brushes, but brooms, mops, dustpans; anything I found sitting around became a brush. I began painting intuitively with acrylic, cold wax, oil sticks, and pencils.

During this time, I found painting a necessity. I found the process of painting enabled me to dream about imaginary walks with my dad through his fields of potatoes, corn, beans, and tomatoes. The colors of the fields and skies were different everyday depending on my state of mind. Color, gestural mark-making, long brush strokes, short brush strokes, repetitive shape making became my answer. Painting brought me back to my childhood of spending long days in nature and collecting materials to make art.

I paint my feelings. I paint my emotions. I paint whatever I need to get out of my head. It’s therapy. It’s medicinal. It’s all about the process.

What came out of this setback is a new series titled INTENTION: A Manner of Healing. My current need is to lose myself in painting. The paintings showcase my childhood through abstract expressionism. The process of creating these paintings is my vehicle to deal with current life experiences. Losing myself in a painting enables me to find myself.
